Crash diets typically promise big results but fail to bring about lasting change. Additionally, these types of diets are often unhealthy and teach you bad habits in the process. Crash diets are unsuccessful for a variety of reasons.

They’re Unsustainable
The popularity of crash diets is primarily due to the initial weight loss at the beginning of the plan. However, the initial weight loss does not last. It is not uncommon for crash dieters to regain the weight they lost plus add a few extra pounds when they come off the diet. The main reason crash diets produce unsustainable results is due to the drastic nature of the diet. Crash diets typically will involve eating extremely low calories or eating one particular type of food for the duration of the plan. As a result, you tend to have an increased appetite and more cravings after you have completed the diet.

They Force Your Body Into Starvation Mode

The only reason a crash diet will lead to weight loss is due to the small amount of calories you are supposed to consume. However, these low calorie diets often backfire because they force your body into starvation mode. When your body experiences severe hunger, it compensates for the lack of nutrition by slowing your metabolism down. As a result, you may experience little or no weight loss on a crash diet.

They Encourage Bad Eating Habits
The key to a successful diet is moderation and consistency. Crash diets encourage extreme changes that are unhealthy for your body. Successful diets consist of proper nutritional intake, gradual changes and regular exercise. Most crash diets will leave you exhausted and moody from a lack of proper nutrition. Due to the low amount of calories you are consuming, you may be unable to exercise on a crash diet. Ultimately, if you want to lose weight and stay healthy, you should avoid crash diets.
